Haircare Tips | Henna | Coconut Oil | Growing Hair | Cone Free | Lush Recommendations | Redhead | Pre-Raphaelite | Boho Hippie Chick | Natural Beauty | Styling Big Hair Without Heat or Products

I thought I would do a blog about hair growing basics. By trial and error I have found a lot out about the best and worst things I can do for my own hair. And hopefully some of this information will be helpful to others. So this is a haircare tips blog specifically relating to colouring and growing your hair.

I will punctuate it with some photos. I’ve wandered thru the flat trying to find good lighting to get a photo of my freshly hennaed hair…it’s not easy! Of a dozen locations I think only two give any idea of my hair colour…with moodlights and fairylights everywhere it’s easy to get cool selfies in here…not easy to get ones of hair colour though. Also, henna really looks different in different light. In artificial light it can look bright red, in candlelight almost black – and in daylight somewhere in the middle. (Though being a nocturnal hermit type, no one sees it very much in daylight!)

image

Will post up some through this blog though so you get an idea can see how well conditioned my henna mix leaves my hair…and how it looks if left to dry naturally. Kind of wavy. V hippie, boho, preraphaelite – just how I like it!

image

In my henna mix…150g henna (my hair is v thick. Most people would only need to use 100g tops for hair my length). Two table spoons of sun in (the peroxide makes the henna stain v deep – I don’t use it every time but found lemon juice, which is used for the same, dried my hair badly but the tiny amount of peroxide in sun in didn’t. I would not recommend it to everyone but it works for me!). Two tablespoons of coconut oil. This moisturises and conditions and also makes it much easier to rinse the henna.
image

Henna is a powder and the mix is like making runny mud and covering your head in it. Then in plastic. Then a towel. Then leave it for 6 hours before washing it out. The henna makes your head v heavy so I tend to apply it to sections and wind them around each other at the front of my head (like my marie antoinette up do for curls in another blog; picture below shows the effect immediately after untwisting the antoinette up do – it settles down into waves and curls…v big hair!).
image

Some people complain that henna is so permanent. But that’s a good thing for me!

image

Some get purple or blueish tones if they over henna…I think mine is less prone to that because of the sun in used in my mix and also there a big sections of white hair now…the front right of my hair is totally white and you can see it is much more orange than the rest after henna! So over time mine is liable to become more yellowy red/orange and less bluey red because there will be more white.

It does mean I have to my roots regularly though…white roots with red hair makes it look like your hair fell out if you leave them! White or grey hair is a “cold” colour and contrasts with red very noticeably. Some people say their grey hair doesn’t take dye or henna at all. To them, I would recommend testing different acidic additions in their mix – wine, lemon juice etc – because that may help. If you’re not anti peroxide, you could also try my sun in mix but do be careful…some people’s hair reacts badly to peroxide – do proper strand tests before you use it all over your head!

image

Sometimes people report their hair changes texture – I am not really sure if mine has but it’s pretty strong and it’s had white bits that have spread since I was 15. But certainly post menopause women’s hair texture tends to change and you may need to adapt the way you care for it.

I am 42 now and for a long time I had very long hair – long enough to sit on – I never trimmed it but I never got split ends. I did henna it though and that improves the condition of your hair. The worst thing that ever happened to my hair was using serums and high performance conditioners. These eventually led to me cutting my hair shorter and shorter because I didn’t know why it was getting frizzy at the ends. The reason was…silicone. Some people can use it. Some can use it occasionally. I can’t use it at all. Silicone makes your hair look and feel softer by literally coating it. But that coating doesn’t necessarily come off with shampoo. And if it doesn’t, it essentially waterproofs your hair and you can’t moisturise or deep condition it. Look out for “cones” in your skincare products too. They can have a similar effect on your skin!

image

One thing I would mention though is that if you are growing your hair (and I am), when it reaches the length mine is now, it’s best to wear it up because the friction of the ends on your clothes can cause breakage and leave some people thinking their hair simply won’t grow past shoulder length. It gets easier to protect the longer it gets. When you can plait it or put it up v quickly with a stick, it’s a lot easier to manage than short hair.

image

Another problem can be friction from your pillow. Silk pillows will prevent that (also better for your face!) – but finding a comfortable way of wearing your hair in bed is a good idea. A very high pony tail that you plait is a good one – or two high pony tails because the weight of your hair needs to be distributed well so it doesn’t pull. If you wear tight pony tails you can actually end up with the hair thinning because it’s being pulled out. But what’s comfortable will vary depending on the position you sleep in. For example – if you sleep on your back two braids might be better. If your hair is heavy, a french plait might prevent pulling. I used to pull my bed 6″ from the wall and sleep with my hair hanging off the bed behind my pillow!  My cat used to hide under the bed and play with it sometimes…that’s probably not good for your hair!

image

My plans for growing my hair out mean I use cone free products (Lush Rehab shampoo…and Lush conditioners – American Cream (contains lanolin), Veganese, Jungle or Happy Happy Joy Joy depending on how my hair is). Henna it and deep condition with coconut oil fortnightly. Have a silk pillow. Don’t use heat or styling products on it. Wear it up most of the time and especially if outside (sun, rain, wind…all can take a toll) or exercising.

So far, without any trims…it’s grown half an inch a month and has no split ends…and that’s after cutting it short 18 months ago. This meant none or my hair had been bleached, dyed or exposed to silicone…so I have a better idea of how my hair respond to being grown out. I have wrecked my hair several times from bleaching it too often and not knowing the perils of silicone and friction damage. We’ll see how it goes!

Carter USM – Sheriff Fatman | Song of the Day | On YouTube

https://youtu.be/US9nVBuDHhg

Woke up w/ a random song fr the #90s stuck in my head. #SheriffFatman by #CarterUSM (sharing fr youtube).

Best lyrics ever?

“Then he somehow got himself on the starship enterprise allowance scheme, with a prince of wales award for pushing valium and amphetamines”

“At six foot six and a hundred tons – the undisputed king of the slums”

“If you flash him a smile, he’ll take your teeth as deposit”

Totally classic!

Bathtime Bliss | Henna | Preening | Work | Magick | Spells

image

Epic #bathtime #bathbomb #relaxation. #Pink #moodlights make me feel v cosy. Today is admin day…my #teddyboy has an early start Sundays so we decided to make sure we don’t get too knackered or let our paperwork get behind, we’d do our own thing Saturday nights. Otherwise there’s the risk one or other of us will say “sod it, let’s have #pizza and watch #horror films on #netflix”. Both being self employed is good…means we can work around each other and see each other a lot…but because he lives a couple of doors down we have to be more disciplined precisely because our lifestyles afford us so much #freedom. I always work more when I work to a schedule. Besides, Saturdays are always the busiest for #spells for me. Reversals, cleansings & protection workings for www.mayamagickal.net clients 😀 Tonight I have two and they are both specific application spells so they don’t take as long as the more comprehensive #Tantric #Shamanic #Ritual options. So today I decided to bath and preen beforehand 🙂 #Henna my hair, tint my eyelashes etc. General maintenance!

Hope everyone’s having a gr8 evening! Xxx

Marie Antoinette Updo Lazy Haircare Styling for Curls & Big Hair ♡

AFTER 🔝

AFTER 🔝

Why the #bighair #antoinette type #updo? Is this an elaborate #hairoftheday #selfie? Nooooo…this is the #hairstyle of the person who decided they wouldn’t wash their hair tonight because they should really #henna their roots & decided to do it 2mrw!

This crazy updo starts with me damping my hair a bit, twisting the front into a hairstick bun. Then twisting 4-6 other sections up to twist around it (secured with #hairsticks & scrunchies) and then getting into a steamy hot bath. Later, when it’s properly dry, I undo it and have big hair with random curliness…which looks like I took a far more active role in styling it than I did!

Kundalini Reiki Course | Energy Work | Self Healing | Spiritual Development | Meditation | Chakra Clearing | Exorcism | Protection | Yoga | Manifesting

Bathtime Blogging | Today, about Kundalini Reiki…

I get many questions about this and whether it’s like Usui Reiki. Kundalini Reiki is a separate system but combines well with other energy healing systems (including Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki). It is an attunement based system and although can be used for hands on healing, it is very versatile in application.

It doesn’t “force” Kundalini Activation in the way some yogic techniques can. It’s important to keep balanced energy to achieve natural progression in this. Kundalini Activation is really a way of saying “Spiritual Development” – it’s often a process of clearing debris energetically as much as it is about increasing your natural basal vibrational rate.

So in that sense, the Kundalini Reiki can be used alongside yogic or any other spiritual development techniques. The Kundalini Fire Meditation takes 5-15 minutes a day and can be used for self healing as well as spiritual development.

It’s far more intention based than some systems; there are no symbols or mantras to learn to use this system and that also makes it popular.

It can be used to send healing to others distantly and also to send healing to a situation. So it could be used in that way to “heal”  a building where negative energy has accumulated by bringing balance. And there many ways it can be used to heal and also to manifest your intentions. This can be done purely by intention, or using visualisation but one of the most popular and simple methods is to write the target and intention on a piece of paper and hold it between your palms while performing the Kundalini Fire Meditation.

You can also use this method of Kundalini Reiki to cleanse, charge or programme crystals – very useful for crystals that can’t be cleansed in water or may be damaged if cleansed with salt.

Once you begin working with Kundalini Reiki it’s common for people to want to combine it with other systems and and the energy for KR is congruent with this; it combines very well with others. I use it daily with the Avalonian Trilogy Meditation – which is far more structured, using a combination of colour flow, symbols and mantras.

Bathtime Blogging | Aspergers | Social Media | Spiritual Development | Mineral Makeup | Reiki Healing | Meditation | Spells | Mayastar Specials

It’s me! #selfieoftheday showing Mineral Magic Mineral Powder (no concealer or anything…this is just the powder, appied with a kabuki brush over Creme de la Mer), eyebrows defined with wunderbrow & lush cosmetics strawberry bombshell tinted lipbalm. I am kind of testing the mineral magic. I don’t wear make up as a rule but when I do it is usually just powder, lipstain and a pair of sunglasses!

So I am wearing mineral magic when I sleep and over moisturiser, over serum, when exercising. Just doing as much as I can with it to see if it irritates around the eyes, dries the skin around my nose, causes spots etc. So far I absolutely love the stuff but am gonna continue my totally unscientific testing as I want to blog about it. I am sure I am not the only 42 year old woman who can’t be bothered with REAL makeup! So, along with my random blogs I think beauty tips and haircare is something that I consider enough to share with my followers.

image

By the way, I know many people who follow me are current, previous or potential students & clients of www.mayastar.net and www.mayamagickal.net – but I know some follow my artwork too. Or are into similar things (henna, magick, ballet, dance, hiphop, corsetry, preraphaelite art, poetry, tightlacing, meditation – I think some  probably find a bit of a kindred spirit because of my autism – I’m aspergers which is a kind of high functioning autism – or maybe just like my style!), but I really do appreciate it!

On my various social networks I have 29000 followers at the moment and it seems amazing – and flattering in a way too. I’m not a natural when it comes to putting myself out there but because my work is online (teaching distance learning courses for spiritual development & self realisation mostly), it’s important for me to be as accessible as possible while keeping a balance.

I think my students and clients find it reassuring…they are able to get a “feel” for me as a person and my principles…and also my interests. I think that can help connect in a more personal way than I would be able to do in real life. Not because I am antisocial but more because my autism means I relate and communicate far more effectively through writing than through speaking. In most ways I am a natural hermit…but that’s a bonus in the work I do. I also think people feel more able to open up to me in a constructive way when it means they have to consider their words and articulate their thoughts and feelings in a way that encourages selfawareness far more than speaking does.

This can be an essential part of tailoring magickal work for people. I don’t advertise my magickal work as so much comes from recommendations…which is a good thing!  I don’t ask people to review my magickal work because it’s v personal. I am a psychotherapist and qualified in counselling which I think also helps…but I wouldn’t advertise that either. So most online reviews are for my teaching work. There are quite a few on www.linkedin.annalouisemay.net and some of www.maya.mayastar.net (FB) too…and quite a few testimonials on the http://www.mayastar.net testimonials page. But for people interested in attunement work, I think the articles on MS – especially www.mayastar.net/courseswork.htm, help people to understand what I do and whether it’s a good fit for them. Likewise, the articles on Maya Magickal that explain what I do and my experience etc, are helpful to people considering whether my work may assist them in their personal goals.

Social media does seem a strange addition…my blogs are not exactly themed and pretty much cover my hobbies and thoughts. But I do think it’s an added dimension to online presence that’s helpful in a way that’s evolved with my work 🙂

Obviously if you work for yourself, regardless of how vocational you consider that work, advertising, marketing and letting people know you exist is important. An example is, if you wanted a new credit card you would put it in google and find the best fit for you. Whereas my services may sometimes be searched for but more often are found by people who didn’t know this kind of energy work was available – so people more often find me when looking for something similar rather than looking for me.

Gosh…that was a looong blog. I hope it makes some sense. In a nutshell, thank you to those who follow me! I really appreciate it. X

I better sign off…bubblebath blogging and the water is getting chilly…and my Teddy Boy is due for dinner and some Studio Ghibli entertainment soon.

Xxxx
